Ty's Take
You can tell a lot about a town by what it chooses to tear down and what it chooses to protect. Deming's doing both this week—clearing out the Balboa's aging bones to make room for something the community actually needs, while also doing the harder, quieter work of keeping kids safe in the hallways where they learn. Neither story makes anybody happy, exactly, but both say something true about where we are. One's about letting go of what's worn out. The other's about facing up to what the world has become, whether we like it or not. In a town this size, you don't get to pick and choose. You address the empty buildings and the metal detectors, and you hope the vendor space brings jobs while the secondary schools bring peace of mind.
