Ty's Take

Summer's finally coming to Deming, and that inflatable water park opening up is exactly the kind of thing families around here have been waiting for—cheap fun when the thermometer hits 100 and you've got kids who need somewhere to cool off that isn't your backyard hose. But the same week we're getting good news about recreation, the police blotter's thickening with arrests and property damage cases that suggest somebody out there isn't feeling quite so neighborly. It's the usual tug-of-war in a town our size, where most people are grinding through their week trying to take care of business, and a handful of others are making everybody else's job harder. Governor showing up for the Western New Mexico commencement is solid for the university—means somebody in Santa Fe's paying attention to what happens down here—but it won't mean much if we can't keep our own streets straight.
