Kid from Albuquerque, couple hours north, drove down to Deming to rob somebody and ended up pleading guilty to it—which means the system worked the way it's supposed to, mostly, but also means we're still the place people come to when they're desperate or stupid or both. Used to be you could tell yourself those kinds of crimes happened in the cities, that small towns got a pass on that particular misery. Not anymore. The border brings opportunity and transit, sure, but it also brings the overflow from bigger problems—young people with nothing to lose, traveling the corridor looking for an easy score. Not trying to blame geography or circumstance for every bad choice, but it's worth noticing that Deming sits in the middle of a lot of traffic, literal and otherwise, and some of it doesn't have good intentions.
