Ty's Take
Metal detectors at the high school and middle school—that's where we are now, and anybody pretending it's not a sign of something broken isn't paying attention. The Deming schools are installing OPENGATE screening systems, which means kids walk through weapons detection the same way travelers do at an airport, except these are teenagers heading to algebra and lunch. It's responsible and it's necessary and it's also a reminder that the world these kids inherit looks nothing like the one their grandparents got. The Balboa Motel's coming down too, making room for vendor space downtown, which is progress of a different kind—the kind that clears out the old to make room for something new. In a border town where everything moves faster than it used to, sometimes you're just trying to keep up.
