Ty's Take

Death notices in a small region are never just names and dates, they're the connective tissue of who we are. Today's obits remind us that Billings and the country around it lose people steadily, people who worked in the refineries or on ranches, raised kids through the school system, showed up at MetraPark or the VFW. Meanwhile, up in Lame Deer on the Northern Cheyenne Reservation, tribal leadership can't seem to find common ground on much of anything, and that kind of dysfunction ripples through the whole community in ways that don't show up in box scores or death notices but hurt just the same. Down at Rocky and MSU-Billings, our teams are grinding through their schedules like they should, winning some and dropping others, which is what September looks like before the real push starts. The Yellowjackets got knocked around at Alaska Anchorage and Rocky fell to No. 19 Bellevue, but the men's soccer team came home with a four-set win to at least give folks something to feel decent about heading into the weekend.
