Ty's Take
The Rio Grande National Forest and the county are finally getting serious about what happens on their land come winter, which around here means snowmobiles, cross-country skiers, and folks who've been doing both since before anybody called it "recreation planning." The workshop down in Del Norte next week is worth the drive if you've got an opinion about where machines belong and where they don't—and in a valley this tied to both the mountains and the backcountry economy, most people do. Meanwhile, up near La Sierra, that fence dispute is getting some actual science behind it now that the wildlife study's done, which might finally settle whether we're protecting cattle or elk, or if we're fooling ourselves thinking we can do both on the same piece of ground. These are the kind of decisions that don't make headlines in Denver, but they shape what this country looks like in five years.
