Stage One fire ban over in Alamosa County means the dry wind is already talking, and it's only April. Up here in Conejos we're not quite there yet, but anybody who's watched a spring blow through the valley knows how fast that changes—one hot week, one careless moment, and what starts as somebody's burn pile becomes everybody's problem. The Cumbres & Toltec corridor runs right through timber country, and so does half our grazing land and what's left of the old orchards around Manassa. This is the time of year when the land gets brittle before the monsoons come, and fire respects no county line when it gets loose in the high country.
