Ty's Take

Watching the Class of 2026 walk across that stage at Conejos High is watching the valley decide who stays and who goes—and that math never gets easier. Some of these kids will come back to ranching or farming or running a business on Main Street, and some won't, and both paths matter more than we usually admit. Meanwhile, up in the sky on Public Lands Day, Ecoflight and the San Luis Valley Ecosystem Council are doing what needs doing: showing folks from the ground what their country actually looks like from above, the water patterns and the land use and the pieces that fit together whether we're paying attention or not. It's the kind of day that reminds you this valley's future isn't just about the kids leaving or staying—it's about everybody understanding what we're actually managing while we're here.
