There's something about the high altitude up here that sorts people quick. Your lungs know it the first time you step off the plane, and if you've got any sense, you figure out fast whether you're staying or heading back down. The folks working on oxygen access around Alamosa are doing the unglamorous work that doesn't make anybody's highlight reel, but it matters more than most things that do. When you're gasping at 7,500 feet and can't afford the equipment that lets you breathe easy, the valley stops being a place of opportunity and starts being a cage.
