The water trial wrapping up in Subdistrict 1 matters more than most courthouse proceedings, because around here the question of who gets what flows down the Rio Grande doesn't get settled by judges so much as it gets lived with, year after year, by farmers and ranchers and towns that have been fighting over these same acre-feet for longer than some of us have been alive. Meanwhile, the valley's still turning over its people and traditions, the way it always does: La Jara brings back its Glory Days, South Fork celebrates its loggers, and somewhere on the grounds this week, somebody's showing livestock while sitting in a wheelchair, reminding us that this place belongs to everybody who works it. That's the San Luis Valley in a nutshell, really. The old fights and the new generation, both happening at once.
