The groundwater fight that's grinding through district court this week is the same argument that's been simmering in this valley since before most of us were born—who gets to drink, and who gets to watch their ditches run dry. You can dress it up in testimony and expert witnesses, but down here in the San Luis Valley, water isn't really a legal question. It's a survival question, and it always has been. The Rio Grande doesn't care much about court orders, and neither do the families whose livelihoods depend on knowing whether next July's irrigation will happen or not. Follow this trial closely, because whatever comes out of that courtroom doesn't end anything—it just sets the rules for the next twenty years of hard feelings.
