Ty's Take
The EPA coming to town to answer questions about the Superfund project is the kind of thing that gets people talking in this valley—and for good reason, since we've been living with the aftermath of that contamination longer than most folks want to remember. But while the feds are here fielding questions about cleanup, the real conversation happening in the background is about water, which has always been the actual story in the San Luis Valley. The aquifer's running down faster than anyone predicted, and a street tax extension might sail through or might not, depending on whether people think city infrastructure matters more than their own wells holding out another five, ten, fifteen years. These aren't separate problems; they're the same problem wearing different hats, and the sooner we stop treating them that way, the better.
