Ty's Take
The Great Sand Dunes pulled in record crowds these past four months, which means the valley's biggest draw is doing what it was meant to do—bringing people out here to see what we live with every day. But those visitors rolling through on their way back to the Front Range don't see what we're managing behind the scenes: the kid in the Alamosa schools fighting something fierce enough to lay them out flat, the drug operation that was moving weight through our town, the cultural roots that go back longer than most folks' family trees. This valley knows how to put on a good face for outsiders, and we should—the tourism dollars matter, the Fiesta Y Fandango matters, the Hispano heritage that shaped this place matters. What matters just as much is remembering that the real story of San Luis Valley isn't the postcard. It's what happens when you actually live here.
