Ty's Take
Bad week for the county when a state party treasurer ends up in custody over a fatal hit-and-run, and you've got to wonder how many conversations at Holloman and out in the ranching country are starting with that same disbelief. Meanwhile the rest of us are dealing with the ordinary weight of things—a fire that displaced families, kids playing their hearts out in the summer heat, horses running their trials like they've got something to prove. The Gateway Freedom Monument dedication this weekend will draw folks who remember what this place means, what it's always meant, and maybe that's the moment we need right now: to step back and remember that a community is built on a lot of small decencies that don't make the front page.
